Southern California

Legal Documents Served Right

Southern California's process servers for individuals, attorneys, and property managers, registered, bonded, and personally accountable from the first call to the filed proof.

  • Registered & bonded
  • Same-day attempts available
  • Court-ready proof of service

Same-Day Priority When You Need It

Prioritized for same-day first attempts when ordered before 12pm on a business day; otherwise the first attempt is typically within 1-2 days after the job is assigned to a server. Same-day attempts are not guaranteed. Restraining orders, evictions, and orders due within 8 days are always attempted as Rush. Routine requests typically get a first attempt within 3-4 days after the job is assigned to a server, subject to server availability.

Six Counties, One Direct Line

Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego counties, covered by servers who know the neighborhoods, not a national call center routing your job to a subcontractor.

Court-Ready Proof of Service

Every server is registered and bonded under California law. Proofs of service are prepared to hold up when they're filed, no scrambling before a hearing.

Talk to a Real Person, Every Time

Submit your documents online and you're dealing directly with the people doing the work, not a rotating support queue. That's why clients keep coming back.

Personal service, documented properly

Every attempt is logged with the date, time, address and what the server observed. That record is what supports a substituted service or a declaration of due diligence when a party is difficult to reach, and it is what makes a proof of service hold up when it is filed.

Common Questions

Process serving questions we answer every day

What is service of process?
Service of process means delivering a legal document to the defendant so they receive notice of a lawsuit or legal matter. In California, a case can't move forward until the court has proof the defendant was properly served. Service must follow strict rules about who delivers the papers, where, and how.
Can I serve papers myself in California?
No. In California a party to the case cannot serve their own papers. Service must be carried out by someone who is at least 18 years old and is not a party to the case. That can be a friend, a relative or the sheriff, but a registered process server is the most reliable option because they know the correct method for each document type and prepare a court-ready proof of service.
What is substituted service?
When the defendant isn't home or available, California law allows you to leave papers with a competent adult (age 18+) at their home or workplace, then mail a copy to their last known address afterward. It's permitted under California Code of Civil Procedure §415.20, but service isn't considered complete until the 10th day after mailing, the rules are strict, and it takes longer than personal service.
How long does service of process take?
Jobs are sent to a process server on business days; orders received on a weekend or court holiday go out the next business day. Once the server has the job, Routine service typically has a first attempt within 3-4 days, and attempts may be made on any day, including evenings and weekends. Rush orders get priority handling: orders received before 12pm on a business day are prioritized for a same-day first attempt, otherwise the first attempt is typically made within 1-2 days. Same-day attempts are not guaranteed. Restraining orders, evictions, and orders due within 8 days are always attempted as Rush. All timing depends on server availability and schedule. If substituted service is used, service is not complete until the 10th day after the copy is mailed.
What if the defendant avoids being served?
If we can't locate the defendant after repeated attempts, California law allows other methods: substituted service, service by publication (newspaper notice), or service on the defendant's attorney. We'll advise you on your options and next steps. For detailed guidance, consult your attorney or the court.
What is a proof of service?
A proof of service is a signed declaration filed with the court swearing under penalty of perjury that papers were served correctly: the date, time, location, and method. The court requires this before moving your case forward. A faulty proof can cause serious delays or legal problems.

Registered process servers for Southern California courts

California Process Servers is a family-owned, registered and bonded process serving firm based at 20350 Ventura Blvd in Woodland Hills. We deliver legal documents and return court-ready proofs of service for individuals, attorneys, paralegals, landlords and property managers throughout Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego counties. Every assignment is handled by servers who are registered in compliance with California Business and Professions Code sections 22350 and 22353 and covered by an active surety bond.

Documents we serve every week

Eviction and unlawful detainer notices, summons and complaints, restraining orders, small claims claims and orders, deposition and records subpoenas, wage garnishments, bank levies, writs and orders to show cause, family law papers, demand letters and cease and desist notices. Each document type carries its own requirements about who may accept service and how it must be documented, and matching the method to the document is what keeps a case from being sent back to the beginning.

Turnaround that reflects reality

Routine assignments typically have a first attempt within three to four days after the job is assigned to a server. Rush orders get priority handling: orders received before 12pm on a business day are prioritized for a same-day first attempt, otherwise the first attempt is typically made within 1-2 days after the job is assigned to a server. Same-day attempts are not guaranteed. Restraining orders, evictions, and orders due within 8 days are always attempted as Rush. All timing is subject to server availability. Standard service includes four attempts varied across days and times, and proofs are generally returned within two to three business days after service completes. These are estimates, not guarantees, and we would rather discuss a tight timeline than promise completion by a deadline.

Hard serves, skip tracing and court filing

When a party avoids service, we vary attempt times, verify addresses in the field, run database and public records skip tracing to locate a current residence or workplace, and offer stakeouts where the situation calls for it. If personal service is not achievable, we prepare the declaration of due diligence a court needs to authorize substituted service, posting or publication. Completed proofs can be filed for you at the Van Nuys, Pasadena, Santa Monica, Orange County, Stanley Mosk, Glendale, Anaheim and Chatsworth courthouses.
