No two document types are served the same way. A restraining order generally has to be handed to the restrained party personally, because the court needs certainty that the person knows what conduct is prohibited before a hearing goes forward. An unlawful detainer summons follows a compressed statutory clock, and posting and mailing is only available once a judge has authorized it. A deposition subpoena may require a witness fee tendered at the time of service. A bank levy has to reach the right branch or legal processing department to be effective. Matching the method to the document is the part of this job that keeps cases moving.
Personal service, substituted service and diligence
Personal service, physically handing the papers to the named party, is always the cleanest result and the one we attempt first. When a party is not available after documented attempts, California Code of Civil Procedure section 415.20 allows leaving the papers with a competent adult at the residence or usual place of business and mailing a copy afterward, with service deemed complete on the tenth day after mailing. Substituted service only holds up if the attempts before it were genuine and properly recorded, which is why we log the date, time, address and observations for every attempt rather than reconstructing them later.
Serving businesses and registered agents
Corporations, limited liability companies and partnerships are served through an officer, a managing agent, or the agent for service of process on file with the California Secretary of State. Agents move, resign and get replaced, and serving an outdated agent wastes an attempt and sometimes a filing deadline. We verify the current agent before dispatching, handle nationwide registered agent services such as CT Corporation, and note in the proof exactly who accepted the documents and in what capacity.
When the address is wrong
A surprising share of assignments arrive with an address that is months or years out of date. Rather than burning four attempts on an empty house, we can run skip tracing: database and public records research, employment and residence verification, and a field check on the most likely address before a formal attempt is made. If the party is actively evading, stakeouts are available, and we can prepare a declaration of due diligence to support substituted service or a motion for service by publication or posting.
Every service above is available throughout Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego counties, and we coordinate service elsewhere in California and nationwide through a vetted partner network with the same documentation standards.
